LIPA's Storm Center
Subject: Storm Center Alert!
Update: Hurricane Sandy
Sent: Monday, October 29, 2012 8:30 PM
Hurricane Sandy is wreaking havoc on Long Island, causing extensive damage and widespread power outages. More than half of LIPA's customers have lost power, with many hours of the storm's fury still ahead of us.
While we do not know the full extent of damage at this time, we expect that the weather will improve enough by 7AM tomorrow morning that we can begin damage assessment and resume restoring power to Long Island's homes and businesses. Please be prepared to be without power for at least 7 to 10 days.
The enormity and intensity of this storm is straining the resources of utilities in the path of Hurricane Sandy, particularly in the Northeast. This limits the number of repair crews available to assist us in restoring power. We have already secured off-Island crews and continue to request additional resources to supplement our workforce. As utilities assess damage to their systems over the next few days, we will have a better understanding of how many additional resources will be available and when.
All of our employees are fully supporting storm restoration efforts and will do so until every customer's power is back on. We will continue to keep you updated here, via phone calls, e-mail, Facebook and Twitter, and through the media.
